Scrappy Bloom Wild in Green and Gold
This quilt was an experiment in print and pattern. We love our cover sample of Bloom Wild with it's bold, solid colors, but I was curious if this pattern could support a scrappy mix of colors and prints. And we're in love with the results!

I deliberately chose saturated prints with a similar scale, but a mix of geometric and floral. All the colors were pulled from the accent fabric - a gorgeous floral from Rifle Paper Co's Bramble collection I got on a destash sale. The rest were fat quarters in my stash, coming from all sorts of designers carried at our local stores.

I decided to partially hand quilt this one - I only hand quilt a project maybe once a year because it takes me so long. To save some time, I mixed machine quilting in the background with contrasting, large hand stiches within the block.

I'm using this Scheepjes Candy Floss for the hand stiches and really really love it. Personally, if I'm going to hand quilt I enjoy large stitches in a contrasting thread. I've been very pleased with how smoothly this embroidery floss glides through the layers.

(A tip for hand quilting, especially if you're frequently taking your project elsewhere to work on it - I machine stitched in-the-ditch to baste the entire quilt together and serged the raw edges. It's really made a big difference in how well the layers have stayed together while being manhandled about.)
Mmmmm that texture is so good...

This quilt is probably my favorite design we've published - it's challenging enough without feeling like a difficult, tedious project and the end result is so balanced and beautiful.

For the backing I used a stash of green Brussels Washer linen I had saved for a garment that honestly...was never going to be made. But it was the perfect color for this quilt and is going to wash up beautifully with a quilty crinkle. Binding was yet another destash Bramble print.

If you enjoy this quilt be sure to check out the other versions on the Project Blog by searching for "Bloom Wild".
Happy Sewing!
