Astera in wovens

You know why Cait and I work so well together? Well...there are several reasons, but one is that she's somehow able to clean the cobwebs out of the dusty corners of my creative space and turn them into something beautiful, making space for new things!

This quilt and pattern was a cobweb from Colorado - I had the idea a loooooong time ago to pattern out a tutorial or free pattern for a big, scrappy, no-background hexagon quilt using the Jaybird Quilt's Hex-n-More ruler. I went so far as to cut out a sizable portion of woven half-hexis from a bundle of Warp and Weft.

And then...and then friends, we moved and every WIP that was packed up and every idea in process became a cobweb.

Yet here we are, several years later and the quilt is a WIP no longer and the idea has materialized! Astera is a free pattern we created exclusively for our newsletter subscribers that is available as a PDF download automatically sent to new sign-ups. While we love being on social media, at markets, and showing up here in the Project Blog, our newsletter is the most reliable way to share what's new and coming with those who allow us in their inboxes a few times a month. If that's you - thank you!!

We designed this pattern to be able to use the Hex-n-More ruler but also included a paper template with the pattern. It's a generous throw size that finishes at 64" x 84" and is a delightfully fun way to use fat quarters or large scraps without worrying about finding background.

I backed it in navy Shannon Cuddle minky and quilted it with some freehand clamshells. I'm slowly but surely getting more confident on the long-arm...this was a fun panto to try freehand! It's bound with an orange woven from Forest Forage.

Probably not the more robust binding I could have picked, but it's just for me.

I absolutely love the heaviness and drape to this quilt - it's so soft and will get a lot of use this fall. And truthfully...after my Fosythia quilt, Southern Amaryllis quilt, and this one....I'm done with my wovens era for a bit! (Cait just rolled her eyes at me like she knows me better then I know myself...)

Happy sewing!

Rebecca
