Forsythia quilt - Warp and Weft version

This quilt was a reminder to me - and I hope to you - there is no quilt too simple! I have been designing quilt patterns for several years now and here I am, sharing these simple squares with you.

Fabric details: All the squares are from Warp and Weft or Alma, by Alexia Abegg for Ruby Star Society. Border and backing are from Moonrise by the same designer for Cotton and Steel.

Friends, this is one of my favorite quilts. I cut fat quarters into 9" squares and started this right after maternity leave with my second daughter, which happened to also be that particular year when the world shut down. I was three months post-partum, back to working in a large, downtown urban safety net hospital with PPE and staffing shortages while managing a brand new role and a brand new baby and a toddler who was a brand new sister.

Guys. Life was chaos. All I could manage were simple 9" squares sewn together.

And then...and then we packed up my sewing studio (amongst the rest of our life) and moved 1000 miles away with a 1 and 3 year old. And then moved again, barely unpacking between homes.

Chaos.

But this quilt, these simple squares, kept me company while my machine was boxed up for eight months. I slowly hand-quilted with big chunky stitches during those months of transition. Nothing fancy, just more straight lines.

I finished stitching the binding on the drive to our final landing place, the place that would see a blossoming new circle of friends, family, and eventually The June Thimble itself. After finally unpacking my sewing machine, of course.

So friends - these simple squares on point carry more memories than our most complex design. This was the quilt that carried my creative ember through it's dying days and rekindled it when it was time.

Proving that we believe no quilt is too simple - we've written up a full pattern for this quilt and it's available to you, for free. Maybe it will be your new favorite quilt too.

Happy sewing!
