Cabin Frost in Kona solids

My pattern design process usually starts with unstructured play. I design a block I'd enjoy building, and play with corners, sashing, and orientation until something jumps out and begins to form an idea. I always begin with an ombre of solids in a single color family so I can focus on the geometry before I play with color.
Most of the time, the initial fabric selections never see the light of day. But this quilt had different plans. This quilt demanded to be designed, and made, as a uniform block featuring an ombre fade of wintery blues. Cait and I just fell in love right away and are so excited to try this pattern in other colorways as well!
We designed this quilt with kits in mind - all the colors are Kona solids and/or easily replicated with your favorite solids of choice. At the end of this blog we have all our color selections listed!
While Cait and I both enjoy triangles immensely, this pattern plays on the structured classic Log Cabin block and is a joy to build. Something about growing the block piece by piece is so satisfying! The cherry on top is when the blocks come together to form that a secondary design!
This pattern constructions the sashing within the blocks, so construction is a breeze. While we love weaving movement into the designs we DON'T love a complicated assembly.
We backed this quilt in our favorite Shannon Cuddle minky in Mallard and it was expertly quilted by Cait on our long-arm - that big stipple stencil gives a beautiful drape to the heavy minky.
Be sure to check out the scrappy versions we made of this pattern as well! We have a rainbow baby quilt and soft contrast version as well.
We hope you love this project as much as we do - choose your favorite color family and make it your own!
Happy sewing!
Rebecca
