Wild Soul with a scrappy background

Confession - I actually made this quilt in January...during the slow slow week after the holidays. I had an itch to make another Wild Soul for my home. I have made several over the years but the only one I've kept the original sample made in Indie Folk fabrics.

I had a beautiful bundle of solids I picked up somewhere but not enough background fabric. Inspired by Emily Dennis of Quilty Love, who often uses scrappy backgrounds, I decided to do the same with this Wild Soul using all my favorite low volume and neutral Art Gallery Fabrics prints I've hoarded over the years. All our patterns are written in a way that makes it really simple to cut a scrappy background like this!

Some of these fabrics have been with me since before I was writing patterns...it feels GOOD to use them.

Friends - use the good stuff.

I used my current favorite Shannon Cuddle 3 minky color, Cedarwood, for the backing and tried out a new stencil from Hancy Creations. It took forever but it was a surprisingly beginning friendly stencil! Even though it is quite dense, a mid-loft batting and the weight of the minky kept this quilt nice and drapey.

Speaking of using the good stuff, while I was absolutely annihilating my treasured fabric I went ahead and cut up this Rifle Paper Co Rosa for the binding. It had just the right peachy orange...and nothing makes me happier than a micro floral binding!

This quilt was actually my first dip into designing with solids, and if you've been around for a few months, it's the quilt that launched the entire sample recoloring project we've been working through this year!

Now that it's springtime, this quilt is finally crinkled up and in the daily rotation on our couch. It's so wonderful to look at my favorite colors and prints every day, rather than see them sitting on my shelf!

Happy sewing - with the good stuff!
Rebecca
