Southern Amaryllis in Snuggles Flannel

When the folks at Art Gallery Fabrics put out a call for makers for their upcoming all-flannel collection called Snuggles, Cait and I looked at each other and immediately said BABY QUILT! We thoroughly enjoyed using AGF flannel for the first time on our Abode Calendula project, so we jumped on this idea right away!

We had no business trying to fit a baby quilt into a busy schedule, but we saw all the fun prints in this collection and spent an afternoon playing with variations and patterns - ultimately we mocked up a blue space-themed baby Southern Amaryllis quilt and sent it for review.

Flannel, obviously, is thicker than regular quilting cotton. We chose this pattern with the triangle modification (included in the pattern) for it's big blocks, simple piecing, and minimal seam bulk. It came together like a dream and we had it pieced in an afternoon.

Cait expertly quilted it with a loose cloud-like pantograph, on our Bernina long arm, in keeping with the theme, but also to keep the quilt drapey and snuggly.

One important tip when working with an all-flannel quilt - when you get to your binding, consider adding 1/4" to your preferred binding width. We typically bind with 2 1/4" strips and that thickness in the flannel really adds up in the folds. We made it work, but next time I'll use 2 1/2"!
