Blue Phlox in Snow Day
My favorite sort of patterns to design are ones that sew together in blocks, without sashing, and form secondary designs when put together. This quilt fit the bill nearly perfectly - while I dislike trimming blocks into side triangles, sometimes a bit of fabric waste makes for the most enjoyable and efficient project.
(I really dislike fabric waste!)
I designed this quilt for my dad, and was looking to make something simply geometric but that would showcase the sorts of large and small scale prints that I enjoy sewing with - AND something that would lend itself to both a scrappy and uniform variation that we try to include in all our designs. This quilt was designed, patterned, pieced, finished, and released all around two major moves for our family, so we have yet to piece a uniform sample! What colors should we do?!
This quilt features a fat quarter bundle of Snow Day fabrics by Mx Domestic for Art Gallery Fabrics. It is the prettiest shades of blue and gray, with adorable little winter motifs and a mix of ditty florals, geometry, and characters. I didn't want a to make a classic Dad Quilt with all plaids, so this fabric line was perfectly me minus my usual fondness for pinks :)
Quilted by Nicole Christofferson of Kwilt It! in cables - my all-time favorite winter quilt pantograph - and backed in cozy navy minky.
Last time we were in Indiana I asked my husband to hold it for a picture in front of my brother's 100 year old barn....we got there eventually...
I'm excited to circle back to this pattern this year and make some lovely spring and summertime samples using the other variation in the pattern! It's a chain-piecing dream and suitable for beginners despite looking more intricate. (No flying geese or triangles in sight!)
Happy Sewing!
Rebecca
